My best friend's bi polar husband is divorcing her. What now?

My best friend and her husband are getting a divorce. These are the facts. Her husband was diagnosed with bi polar disorder about two years ago. He had been showing signs that something was wrong for a long time. They have been married for ten years. Anyway, he was actually hospitalized for two weeks and released into her care afterward. He decided that she was the one who put her in there, but that is not true. He asked her to help him, desperately. So now he hates her for that. Al of a sudden some pharmaceutical company who pays him to take their anti depression medicines, had a Doctor diagnose him depressed not with bi polar disorder. He ran away from the family, her and their 3 boys, and ran up thousands of dollars worth of debt. He traveled all over the place, opened five bank accounts, stole money from the company credit card and left them without any money for food or anything. She had to sell plasma. His parents would not help as they did not believe, and still don't, in mental disorders and blamed her for him leaving.So after he came back and moved out of his apartment that he was sharing with a schizophrenic man, he began to treat them all horribly. He went from really highs to really lows, as is normal for bi polar disorder. After putting up with his lies and him not wanting treatment, the abuse, the mental abuse and abuse of the children she left him and moved back home. He refuses to give them any money as he says that it is her fault that she left. When he comes into town he refuses to see the kids unless she has sex with him. And if she says no, he leaves back to where he lives. So she does it. I know she has actually come to hate him. It is hard to see that. So she filed for child support, at which he picked up the kids when he found out and took them out. He told them that he was the one with the power as he is the one with the money and that he loved them more. The kids feel uncomfortable with that and when he is like that. He filed for divorce and the child support agency told her they had to to stop the claim as he said that he had filed for divorce. She has not received any notice. They have a house they bought for 225,000 that is under both of their names. He says that because he was the one paying it, that he gets the house or any money from the sale. I don't know how else to help her. I have no idea what to expect from a divorce or how things are divided up. I told her to push for a mental wellness evaluation as far as visitations were concerned. This is in Texas, by the way. So does anyone know what to expect in the divorce, the selling of the house, and child support? Please help so that I can pass this along. She doesn't have any money for a lawyer by the ay. And legal aid here sucks.

In for a tough battle. You can help by trying to read up on cases similar to this. In the end even if there is some settlement it can be impossible to have it enforced. It's a grim picture so just try to be as informed as possible throughout the process.

I hope she has a job because if she is awarded the house until the children are grown - she'll have to pay the mortgage and/or buy out her soon to be ex. Nobody gets a free ride...

She better withdraw whatever she needs to from the savings and hire a good attorney. There is no way to get around doing that.

Yup, that's BiPolar for you. He's showing the classic signs. Unfortunately, if he's only on anti depression medication it will almost always send BiPolars into a manic phase, which explains the excessive spending, stealing, moving around, etc. He needs better care.
As far as the divorce, he may contest it despite his current mental state. If he does, she'll need a lawyer. She will get full custody and he'll get supervised visitation, especially if he's not stable. Child support will be difficult because not many BiPolars can keep a job, although the court will still order it.

She needs to go consult with an attorney asap!!!! There are attorney's that will help her without money up front. The information her husband is giving her is completely inaccurate.
