Can I take classes for Nurse Aid if I've been told I have Hep-B? |
A few years ago I was a regular blood donor until I received a letter from the Red Cross explaining that I had contracted hepatitus B. I never confirmed it but just stopped donating blood. Now I'm interested in becoming a nursing student and am required to get a Hep-B vaccine. Do I just give up on classes? What happens to me if I do get the vaccine? You must speak candidly to the director of the program you plan to enroll in. Healthcare schools have different policies regarding what documentation Hepatitis B positive students must submit, but you cannot be discriminated against because of your condition. I have had Hepatitis B+ students; they submitted a form signed by a physician stating "I recommend this patient NOT receive the Hepatitis B vaccination". Please be aware that some clinical agencies (where you will go as a student to practice on patients) may not let you practice if you do not take the Hepatitis B vaccination, regardless of the reason. But first, make an appointment to speak to the healthcare program Director. And if you have Hepatitis B, please see a physician to assure you remain in good health! And don't give up on a medical career. you cannot be discriminated against for having a medical condition. They may ask you to get the vaccine then you will just tell them that you already have the disease. yes but some jobs might test you and not hire you. they will never tell you thats the reason though. especially if you plan to get a job in a nursing home or assisted living place. My dear first of all you should go for HBsAg test, that is for hepatitis B, secondly if you are positive that time it does'nt mean you are positive now also, thirdly after testing you could know your status whether you are carrier or sufferer. After that you will join your course, becausehepatitis can spread only by body fluids ,not through air or water.Definitely you go for three doses of hepatitis vaccine, it not depends whether you are carrier or suufferer, it is alwys beneficia;. They can't stop you from being a CNA or a nurse if you've had HepB. It's none of their business anyway. Just get a blood test to see if you have the antibodies for it and if you don't, then get the vaccination. |
