Would the money being spent on the World Cup be better spent helping ordinary South Africans?

Let's face it, a once prosperous nation has been reduced to an African latrine under ANC mismanagement; men rape children, people die for their cars, homes are invaded, the infrastructure is crumbling; AIDS is destroying the population and each day the money is worth less and less, yet the government seems to have plenty of cash to build stadiums that will be used for the tournament, and that's it.
Let's not be under any illusions, when, and if the games come to an end, those stadiums will deterioate and fall into disrepair, just like the rest of the country.
Wouldn't that money be better spent on the search for an AIDS vaccine (no wait, that's the responsibility of the US taxpayer) or to employ an effective police force, or to help house the many homeless BLACK people in what used to be South Africa?

The pro's of using the World cup money for improving the lives of our citizens definitely outweighs the pro's of actually hosting the World Cup. The jobs that this World Cup creates is a temporary thing, after the final game is played those jobs will no longer exist. Its a short term solution. Using that money to house the homeless, train the unskilled, help those with AIDS and better educate those who are at risk of contracting HIV, to name but a few things, is a long term solution. It would just be so much more beneficial to so many more people.

Depending on what they consider helping South Africans are. For instance our local municipality thinks that helping the people in our "'Dorpie"" is by changing the street's names. I don't think the problem is on where will the money come from, no, a few years ago we had moral values and the army.The army kept illegal immegrants out of the country. It seems as if the Government doesn't want to do anything about the situation in the country at present. A thing no money situation will change.
I think the World Cup is just a way to make money. You know the first African country to host this. This isn't to better the South African economy

Why is the word black is capital letters? To start with let me say that I live in S.A and that you have an extremley unfair attitude towards MY country. We are not stupid here we know that their are problems, issues all of that. Yes homes, are broken into, yes we get hi-jacked, yes people die of AID's everyday yes children have been raped. But no, no to all the accusations you have made. Africa has suffered ever since colonisation, countries like america ( whre YOU are from) exploited us and we have never quite recoverd. But we sure as hell are trying. Our infrastructure is not crumbling, BTW. Maybe the money could be better spent on feeding 1 million dying people today but it is the concept of give a hungry man corn and he will be full, but give him a seed and he will be full for many years. This whole 2010 thing will bring tourism, our public transport is being upgraded, laws are changing all of this because we have been given an oppourtuinity. And the crack about the AID's research, your ignorance makes you seem like a fool. We pay nearly 50% of our earing in tax and 35% of our total tax is used for AIDS research and whatnot. Did you know that the govt. provides anti-retrovirals to all of thos with AID's, it is lack of education which causes the deisease to spread like it is. the BLACK people will not get an education, will not work, will not do anything to help themselves. I suggest you come here in 2010 and see our wonderful country and the wonderful people. Then make your judgement.

I guess they thought like business men i.e. You have to spend money to make money.
The idea is that after spending all those millions of Rands thousands of sports tourists will flock to SA, and all of this will give the country a massive PR boost, thus making a profit exceeding the money that was spend to host the thing, and giving the SA economy a massive boost.
Problem is like any good business one must keep ones reputation up, and we have been giving ourselves a lot of bad press lately, so unless we clean up our act and soon, all the people expected to flock over wont come.
We can only sit and wait with bated breath to see how the rest of the world reacts.

I honestly think that South Africa isn't ready to host something as big as this....
and yes...i can think of many different ways to use that money a lot better....to help the people...the homeless...aids orphans....
but it seems to me that a lot of people find the world cup far more important....
yes, maybe it will bring in money...but not enough to cover what they have spent....
but hey that's just me!

The World Cup ... it's ridiculous. I want to be in another country at that time. There's going to be chaos, that's for sure. I think it's one big joke. Say no more.
