research done in space helps in all fields of science, including medicine, and we ARE spending billions in dollars in AIDS research as well

Let's see, invest in gaining knowledge that may answer many questions and perhaps teach us how to treat this planet or spend the money for a vaccine because people that have the disease are so selfish they cannot keep it to themselves.

Actually, NASA does fund some disease research; while AIDS is obviously a problem, it's not their charter to look for a cure. On the other hand, who would've thought studying bread mold would prove to be valuable? And - today, as a result, we have penecilin.
And, billions *are* being spent on AIDS.... but should that curtail all other research & development?

Here's a better one - we pay farmers to grow food which becomes a surplus and then we pay other people to buy the surplus and store it. There's waste everywhere but sometimes the pursuit of basic scientific knowledge is worth it. This years NASA budget is 13 billion which is a nit compared to most budgets including the war.

NASA is providing a distraction so people don't think so much about what Bush is up to.

If the money was going directly to any medical research, it would be better spent on investigating cancer and cures for that. I realize aids is more politically correct but cancer is a lot more prevalent and can strike anyone, anytime for no apparent reason. You can take precautions to avoid HIV.

The money spent on NASA has resulted in many scientific break throughs and has more than paid for itself.

Why the hell do so many people want to see NASA's tiny portion of the US budget given over to other things but don't complain about the vastly greater portion of funding given to developing new ways of killing people?

In FY 2007 NASA got $16 billion. The Department of Defence got $440 billion, $84 billion of which was specifically for weapons and $73 billion of which was for weapons research. $3.6 billion was allocated for the construction of just FOUR new ships for the navy!

The Department of Health and Human Services was given $698 billion.

Does NASA's budget really seem like such a huge waste now? Less than half a cent from every tax dollar goes to NASA, so stop complaining about it.

Right. Not enough money for those people with AIDS. Let's leave NASA alone because the people there are at least earning their wage. Now let's take billions from the entitlement class in this country and give it to the AIDS people, since neither group earns the money. No wait, maybe just spending the time to preach morality will stop the disease dead in it's tracks for anyone that is serious about stopping the disease. For those that are not, just as well we remove their stupid genes from the gene pool.

The whole space program is designed to subjugate other nations with a show of prowess. All that money can be put to better use. A chimp can do a better job balancing the budget. Oh wait!!! he cant Buahahahaahahahaahahahaahahahaaha

The cure for AIDS has been found. Some humans are have natural immunity to AIDS. Their progeny will inherit the earth. The rest of us will go the way of the dodo.

NASA's mission is space exploration not AIDS vaccine research. Ask your congressman to cut off the budget to NASA if you are so keen, but remember, space exploration has led to a number of remarkable spin-off benefits which included better health care through improved communications.

if u are concerned on what the hell our tax money is gone to, why blame NASA, i see many worse things the goverenment use the money for. look at the war. i bet the money used there can be used for better cause

They spend it on research scientific studies and little green men.
A better question is why do governments need attack and defensive munitions.....every one destroy all weapons and lets have peace ........hang about then the generals have no job and there would be a huge unemployment crisis....these are the same generals and with their advisers to the president that run the military campaigns to justify their own existance and jobs. the governments are just stupid....remember oli north the contra deals sealing drugs to buy weapons vietnam....its all crap.
back to the question...if there are little green men scientists would try to learn through communication and the militry would ask for more funds in case there is a threat...........

You really should read a newspaper every once in a while. There has been plenty of money thrown away on AIDS research with no results. There are many great things that have come from the space program.

the truth is that NASA is not spending that much.. in fact the amount of money spending ever, in real research about an aids vaccine (not a palliative drug) is fifty times less than the monthly bill of the iraq war, and the nasa research is very important in the long term.
