AIDS Africa?

I plan on taking a trip with with my church to Africa to help build some homes, plant gardens, and help teach the children. My boyfriend say if I go he's not messing with me anymore because the bugs are transmitting AIDS to people. He is also upset with the fact that we will go all the way there to help but so many people need help here. We do plenty of mission work here in this city and others. He feel we are being used by the church for publicty. My questions are can I get the virus by a bug bite? Should I not help over in Africa?

Wrong. You cant get HIV(the virus which causes aids) from a bug bite. Due to the fact that the virus cannot replicate inside anything other than an human being, thus being destroyed within the bug. You can only get HIV virus from direct contact with infected blood, or any other bodily fluids through an open sore or sex.

Moving onto moquistos - Yes, they can suck blood from a person with AIDS, but they cannot spread it on because:

1. The virus doesnt live long outside a human being.

2. Again, It cant replicate, thus being neutralised.

Think about it, if it could be passed on through bug bites the whole entire world would have it by now.

I think you should do some research into the HIV virus itself, or consult a medical practitioner who can re-assure you.

To stand corrected on my previous answer, I have heardit is theoretcally possible for it to pass through mosquito bites, but highly unlikely and there havent been any reported cases of it. Any abroad work is going to have its risks, its a personal choice whether or nto the risk is worth it.

I am morally against mission work that preaches a specific religion to any populatoin, as it is taking advantage of their situation. "Hey, here's clean water and a new house, and by the way, trade your religion for ours." It is very damaging to indegenous populations. If the intent is truley to help the people in need, however, then it is for good cause.

No but you can get other nasty things, I suggest this which you should have already been told, go see your local GP tell him exactly where you plan on going get some vaccines done and get him to tell you the risks and outlines of the current area.

I did that when i went to Banda Aceh and East Timor.
