Why was aids viewed as a primarily homosexual virus? |
Were they the first to come forward with their aflictions? How did it all start and what group has the highest percentage infected with aids? Acquired immune deficiency syndrome or acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS or Aids) is a collection of symptoms and infections resulting from the specific damage to the immune system caused by the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). Most researchers believe that HIV originated in sub-Saharan Africa during the twentieth century; it is now a pandemic, with an estimated 38.6 million people now living with the disease worldwide. Homosexuals were the group that first had aids in this country and continue to be the group with the highest percentage infected. because men are always looking for sex so therefore 2 men are more likely to have casual sex than women are. people believed because a lot of gay men had the virus it was viewed as a primarily homosexual virus. It started in Africa, went to Haiti and took hold, then a gay airline steward who did a lot of traveling and had a honey in every port was spreading it across the U.S and other nations...the CDC was frantic to find out what all these gay men who had AIDS had in common and it was this airline steward....when they tracked him down and spoke with him he was still well and had no idea he was infected...this was early in the spread of the disease... It started in Africa by eating monkeys that had it. At first it was mostly gay men that got it. I believe African women are the ones who are dying most from it now. There are tow main types. You are much more likely to transmit the virus if you are a male having homosexual contact with another male. I don't remember the exact statistics, but because of the nature of male homosexual sexual intercourse, the likelyhood of some form of trauma (even minute) to the rectum or anus is high and that increases the risk of disease. Like everyone else said, in Africa it's mostly heterosexual. It is considered a homosexual disease because homosexuals were the first ones to come forth with the disease in the US. Back before AIDS/HIV, people mainly only used condoms for pregnancy. So men weren't using condoms for sex, because they obviously don't have to worry about getting pregnant. It was spreading really quickly because of bathhouses and such, which were shut down after AIDS became a real epidemic. Also, this doesn't REALLY have much to do with it, but anal sex often is more bloody than vaginal sex, and you are more likely to contract AIDS like that. But not much more. It's really only because when AIDS started appearing in the US, homosexuals weren't using condoms, and heterosexuals were (just because of pregnancy). aids was traced back to Africa in the 70's where it was pinpointed that a gay male flight attendant got it and brought it back to America. since he was gay the first group of people to become infected were gay males as he had multiple partners. the highest rate of people becoming infected is no longer gay males(they learned prevention methods) now young African American women between the ages of 15 and 25 are the highest rising group of infected people. |
