Does anyone know anything about the theory that AIDS is a man made virus?

Two species of HIV infect humans: HIV-1 and HIV-2. HIV-1 is the more virulent and easily transmitted, and is the source of the majority of HIV infections throughout the world; HIV-2 is largely confined to west Africa [9]. Both species originated in west and central Africa, jumping from primates to humans in a process known as zoonosis. HIV-1 has evolved from a simian immunodeficiency virus (SIVcpz) found in the chimpanzee subspecies, Pan troglodytes troglodytes [1]. HIV-2 crossed species from a different strain of SIV, found in sooty mangabey monkeys in Guinea-Bissau [9]. It is possible that HIV-1 entered the human populations in the 1930's.

Another controversial possibility for the origin of HIV/AIDS was discussed in a 1992 Rolling Stone magazine article by freelance journalist Tom Curtis. He put forward the theory that AIDS was inadvertently caused in the late 1950's in the Belgian Congo by Hilary Koprowski's research into a polio vaccine [10]. Although subsequently retracted due to libel issues surrounding its claims, the Rolling Stone article encouraged another freelance journalist, Edward Hooper, to travel to Africa for 7 years of research into this subject. Hooper's research resulted in his publishing a 1999 book, The River, in which he alleged that an experimental oral polio vaccine prepared using chimpanzee kidney tissue was the route through which SIV mutated into HIV and started the human AIDS epidemic, some time between 1957 to 1959 [11].

The US was experimenting with very similar viruses years before the outbreak. One has to wonder.

i don't think it's man made, but in a way people are what causes AIDS.

There were a lot of rumors about that when Aids first became known, like the rumor that whites made it and infected blacks with it (because it was first found in Africa), etc., but that is stupid.

We barely know how to make genes now, and even the smallest virus (which aids is not) has hundreds of genes. Bottom line: nobody has the tools or know-how to make a completely artificial virus, yet. Certainly nobody knew how thirty or forty years ago, when aids appeared. And aids takes so long to kill, it isn't likely that it was developed by putting together pieces of natural viruses, either.

The best theory is that it came from people eating uncooked monkey brains in Africa (yes, some people really do that) and the people caught the monkey viruses (which they would never have caught otherwise), which mutated into aids.

Life lesson: don't eat monkey brains.

im pretty sure aids started from two scientists from here or from eurpe.... that went to africa in the forrest to get a type of vaccination from monkeys for childrens liver that had something wrong with them. later they found out that the monkeys were caring this weird virus which caught on to the children (aids). its not much help but i saw it in the history channel

Thats an urban myth that has been around for YEARS. no one knows where exactly it started, but it was popularized by The Soviet Union during the cold war for propaganda purposes in third world countries, along with a lot of other horrible things the USA supposedly did. For the record, the USSR also told people in africa that the USA ate babies, and used as proof the fact that Gerber food jars had babies on them. In africa, at the time, due to the massive illiteracy, what was IN a food container, was pictured on the label. So that shows you how reliable the info was.
