WHy is the AIDS virus more common among Gay man and African American ?

I heard that the victims of AIDS virus are usually these groups. WHY?

Because anal sex is one of the easiest ways for transmission to happen. Most gay men practice anal sex. The rate is also higher among people that live in poverty, probably lack of education and funds to buy protection. That is why black men also fall into a high risk category.

Several reasons.

Homosexuals --

Anal sex has a high chance to transmit HIV than vaginal sex. The anus does not produce lubrication like the vagina and there is a greater likelihood blood will be transmitted through tearing.

HIV first appeared among the homosexual population. It spread through the homosexual population quickly in the early 1980's because at the time there was little use of condoms in homosexuals (there is no chance of pregnancy) and a fairly free attitude towards sex.

Once doctors were able to identify the virus and it's causes, the gay community took great measures to spread safe-sex awareness.

I believe current statistics show that there are very low incidences of Gay men contracting HIV in the past few years.

African Americans --

Social attitude among African-American communities show that a large number of African-American men do not use condoms when they have sex. Some studies have showed that African-American men are more likely to cheat on their girlfriends and wives (I got that from NPR, and am not making it up).

For a long time the African-American community did not view HIV as a threat and as a result members within the community did not use condoms. Even today, many African-American view AIDS as a "homosexual disease."

I believe it's because some gay men do not use protection, or they may have it and may know it and will pass it on to their partner. As for African Americans, some are probably not educated about AIDS, or they may not have proper medical insurance/plans to get themselves tested and treated. They may not be aware that they have it at all. Another possibility is that they may habitually have unprotected sex with multiple partners and unknowingly spread the disease. I hope this helps you.

Because so many gay men have anal sex and a lot of times don't use protection. It's a scary situation, but so many think it won't happen to them and then bareback. I've also heard so many gay guys say that it's better without a condom, which is fine but watch out. If you are going to bareback, I personally feel that it should be someone you have been with a while and have built up a trustworthy relationship. If you and your partner have been sleeping with only each other, then go at. But if you sleep around and have unprotected sex, at least be responsible enough to get tested often.

First of all, be clear about this. You are referring to North America. If you look globally, more than 85-90% of people living with HIV got it from HETEROSEXUAL SEX (that would be a penis and a vagina).

Yes, anal sex is slighly more risky than vaginal sex (and there IS a natural lubricant produced, but just as with vaginal lubricant it should be added to by water-based personal lubricant)

HIV has always gone first to the most marginalized in societies (this is true around the globe). For a variety of psycho-social and economical reasons to large to discuss here.

A point of fact, in Canada women have overtaken injection drug users as per-year infection rates go. 30% of all new infections are among women, 18% among injection drug users. Yes, gay men are still unacceptable high (40-45%), but they have come down in numbers since the beginning of the epidemic...women on the other hand have risen drastically. The epidemic is looking more and more like it looks in Sub-Saharan Africa with women being the most at risk.


And:
-the majority of gay men use condoms EVERY time they have sex and generalized statements to the contrary say more about a person's lack of knowledge/homophobia

-not all gay men practice anal sex
-in absolute numbers 7X more women than gay/bi men engage in anal sex....gay men do not have the anal sex market cornered by any means.
