I read somewhere that it came about by scientists in Africa working on reises monkeys. When the became sick they didn't know what was wrong and let them go. So they could live out their days in the jungle. But only found out later they could spread the disease and it could be spread to humans.
Can't remember where I read it, but think that was the story.

I heard it came from missionaries having relations with the monkeys
