Only 20 to 30 percent of people infected with HIV, or human immunodeficiency virus, develop AIDS. Some do so months after infection, but for others the disease does not appear for years, as many as seven or more.

Also, HIV tests aren't accurate immediately after infection because it takes time for your body to develop these antibodies 鈥?usually about 12 weeks. In rare cases, it can take up to six months for an HIV test to become positive. Then, AIDS disease can remain dormant for years after the positive HIV test.

HIV (the virus that causes AIDS) is NEVER dormant.

From the moment it enters a persons body and begins to multiply, it doesn't stop. It is estimated that up to 10 BILLION copies of HIV are made each day, and the body's immune system fights back to the best of its ability.

As far as outward symptoms of HIV go, it can be 10 or more years before symptoms appear, but by no means is the virus 'dormant' during this time.

As far as testing, most people (95%) will test HIV antibody positive at the 2 month mark post infection, over 99% by 3 months. The test takes time because it is looking for your body's response to the virus (antibodies) and not the actual virus itself. It can take the body a little time to do this (up to 3 months, 6 months in very rare cases)

AIDS is not a virus.

As for HIV which is a virus, that for the most part can remain dormant for the 10 years that you mentioned.
