Would clever- but emotionally stunted science/geek types, love to evolve a more robotic human culture, and...?

....are they mostly scared or contemptuos of the natural world that gave birth to them and sustains their life?

what else could one conclude, the way science/technology/industry has.. and continues to rip-up and demolish the natural world.

i have heard of the greening of science...but i see no evidence of it yet.

i know you could argue i should be attacking capitalism, not science.....but the way i see it..theres no distinction: one has always been in the pocket of the other.

is it just wishful thinking to expect the scientific mind to be bothered with such a pesky and annoying restraint as...ethics!

maybe there are just too many of us on this little planet, multiplying [with the aid of scientific advances] into agent SMITH's virus humanity....and the computer geeks are destined to inherit the earth...or whats left of it!

maybe some even yearn for the coming of machine landscapes, and cant wait for that artificial world....plugged in to the back of their heads.......

As one of those geek/science types, no - I work in an industry where we operate a very green power plant (a nuclear plant) - and have a very big focus on protecting the environment. I spend as much time as I can outdoors - bicycling mostly. The universe is an amazing thing, and I never cease to be in awe - and have found there is always something to learn... Most of my fellow engineers think along similar lines. Robots are tools to accomplish something, but not an end-all by any means. I think you would be very surprised at much of the science out there - and the focus on reducing the human footprint on the world where we can. Also, I believe most of my fellow scientists operate with very high ethical standards. Like any human venture there are those who are ethically challenged, but that is the exception rather than the norm.

I suppose I am one of the peole who you are referring to as a science "geek" and contrary to your beliefs I am neither emotionally stunted or scared of the natural world. I study science because I am fascinated with the natural world and I have the utmost respect for it - I don't want to demolish it. In fact, if anything, I do what I do because I want to preserve and protect the natural world.

If you have never seen evidence of the greening of science then I don't know where you have been for the past decade or so.

Science is the basis of pretty much everything and all of us depend on it in some way or another. Places get ripped up and demolished because of demand from the general public for things like housing, landfill sites, paper production and energy production which, I expect, are utilised by you (and the rest of the population) on a daily basis. You are just as guilty for the destruction of this planet as anyone else - scientist or not.

What makes you imagine that creative scientists are emotionally stunted? A much better case could be made out for saying that those who are scared of science do not have the emotional maturity to appreciate the realities of the world that we live in.

I suggest you read any of the popular writings of some real scientists, like Carl Sagan, Roald Hoffmann, Freeman Dyson, Stephen J Gould, Richard Dawkins, or Richard Feynman. You will find that they are full of ethical sensitivity and concern for the planet.

As for industrial society "destroying the natural world", what do you think life in preindustrial society was like?

You are seriously ticked, aren't you. Science in itself is its only reward. The early scientists made nothing from what they learned and discovered. As the nobility (the money people) discovered how science could make them richer and more powerful, they started rewarding scientists for helping them. Since you can only stay powerful with a strong military, science was rewarded for making the military more powerful. Since military is about destruction and the moneyed class only wanted more, the state of the environment was of no concern. Of seven plus billion people on the planet , there are probably only one million with ethics or a concern for the planet. I hope humanity will figure it out because what we are doing will make it difficult for the insects to take over.
