How long does AIDS live outside the body?

Hello all, my husband and I are moving into a house where two men had AIDS and he is paranoid about the toilets and shower etc... I was just curious as to how long the virus can live on surfaces outside the body. I told him that a little bleach or hospital grade disinfectant will take care of it. (I am a housekeeper at a hospital and have access to these types of cleaners). So to put my husband at ease, can someone recommend a website or some truthful info on this so he will stop freaking out? LOL thanks!

I am a nursing student. In class last week we were discussing HIV. It only lives outside the body for a short period of time, about 20 minutes. By the way, you can't get it from sharing a toilet with someone or sharing a fork. You can only get it by your body fluids coming in contact with their body fluids. If there are body fluids hanging around a cleaned out house when you move in, you may want to reconsider regardless of if the previous owners have a disease!

Aids is transmitted by four body fluids: blood, semen, vaginal secretions and breast milk. It is not transmitted from saliva, so even kissing would not give you Aids. You certainly could not contract Aids by living in a house where the former residents had Aids, unless you have sexual relations with them or exchange blood with them.
I think it is safe for your husband to stop freaking out.

You just need to be careful about any type of dried blood coming in contact with your blood. Apparently when you wash blood it can become hazardous all over again!!

I'm pretty sure you should be safe if you use disinfectants. If you work in a hospital you should know about the safety precautions!!!

You could call your local health department

or

call your infectious diease department of the hospital to find out.

15 days, it is able to infect even if bodily fluid is dried, but soap and alcohol will kill it.

Aids can't live outside the body. It needs a host and does not do well out in the open. It's basically deminished by 99% in an hour.
