Why is the AIDs virus so prevalent among gays?

Why is the AIDs virus so prevalent among gays?

"Since it is not transmitted in every act of intercourse by a virus carrier, experts said, the disease might not spread widely from a small number of carriers unless they engaged in frequent intercourse with a large number of partners, a condition that was met among male homosexual populations in some cities in the 1970's."

HIV is more easily contractible through anal sex as opposed to other modes of sex. Men are also more promiscuous (anonymous sex, one night stands, many partners, etc.) than women, so imagine what kind of sex a society of men-for-men is having. Of course, this should not generalize all gay men. I have also heard of a drug problem in the gay community. That along with risky sex is another could be another factor.

But PLEASE, do not let these issues affect the way you see gay people in general. A large number of men (gay and straight) have no desire to be promiscuous, and most do not abuse drugs.

Because they are very promiscuous (have multiple sex partners) and most don't wear condoms. A study conducted in India showed that men who are not circumcised are more likely to contract the virus than circumcised men. Likely because the virus hides under the foreskin and many men just wash the outside only, forgetting to pull the foreskin back and wash that area as well.

I read where a lot of young white females are contracting the the HP virus in their anus because of anal sex. So the anal area may also play a role in the prevalence of the virus among gay men.

No sin ever goes unpunished!

it isn't. today, straight people have a higher rate of infection.

some history:

in the late seventies/early eighties the HIV/AIDS crisis first emerged in the US in the gay male communities in New York City and San Francisco....at that time, gay men were in a unique position, gaining community, personal acceptance, sexual freedom. basically all stds were largely under control so gay men saw no reason to practice safe sex...they couldn't get anyone pregnant etc. because there's often a latency period of a few years before symptoms arise, many people in the gay community were infected before there was even a name for the disease.

today, gay men are no more likely to be infected than anyone else. in fact straight people tend to contract it more because gay people tend to be more educated about safer sex practices. in general people in the lgbt community are more comfortable talking about sex and how to have it safely.

because it first emerged in the gay community, and our society was so homophobic in those days it immediately got labeled a "gay disease" even though anyone can get it and all sorts of people do. president reagan at that time knew about the disease for years before he ever said the name publicly. funding for research was very slow to get started because of the associated stigma. the gay community had to fight on their own for health care and research--even though at this time many other people were infected--so that's how much of the american public first learned about it.

HIV can be transmitted through blood, semen, vaginal fluids, breast milk and bile. anal sex is an especially "successful" way of transmitting the disease because anal tissues are so sensitive, microtears are common (also in vaginal intercourse this frequently happens). the virus then can get directly into the bloodstream. another highly "successful" way of transmission is when drug users share needles--an HIV+ person puts a needle into their bloodstream, and then when someone else uses that needle some of the HIV+ person's blood goes directly into their bloodstream. straight people who have unprotected vaginal, anal, oral sex or use intravenous drugs are just as likely to acquire it.

When the virus was first discovered it was thought by many that was a gay person disease. This is no longer the case. We have since found out that it affects people both gay or straight and male and female.

They believe the virus first appeared in lab monkeys at a facility in Africa perhaps as early as the mid 1960s. It is thought that the escape of one infected animal began the spread into the human population.
.
Today Africa is where the disease is the most wide spread and it is not confined to gay people. Men women and children have contracted the virus. Poorer areas where populations live in close proximity, inferior sanitation and medical facilities has seen the virus spread from men to women and to children. have had a hard time controlling the problem in a large portion of Africa. It is no longer considered to be a gay persons disease.
.

Male homosexuals generally have a lot more sex-partners than heterosexuals. And, the more sexual partners someone has, the greater the exposure to deadly STDs, including HIV.

Gays compose maybe 2% of the population, but account for 40% of the HIV cases, while heterosexuals compose 98% of the population, but account for 60% of the HIV cases. The people who are saying that heterosexuals get HIV more than homosexuals are being manipulative with the statistics: Things must be looked at in percentages, not the total amount.

the virus was genetically engineered in a lab specifically to target gays and they didnt expect it to end up in blood supplys or the other consequences this is why there is no cure the only reason hiv meds were developed to prolong life was because of public outcry for something to be done and the fact that phamecticals companys saw big money to be made by selling the hivmeds another reason while they will not cure it no money in the cure once the vaccine is developed the threat will be over as far as the world is concerned those of us with the virus will continue to live off the medication until we die then the hiv aids epidemic ends till some idiot in a lab makes something worse

Actually, now more heterosexuals have it that homosexuals (in terms of who is gaining it at a faster rate now, not in terms of all the numbers in the world of people who do have it) because while the homosexual population is learning that wearing a condom is important, the heterosexual population thinks they are immune and don't insist on having a stranger (or anyone, really) wear a condom while having sex because so long as she's on the pill "we're okay".

THere are many variables...i think in the gay culture its more accepted to have sex with alot of people and because the gay circle is smaller than the hetero circle, it spreads alot faster. Also it is easier to get an STD when having anal sex because of the tearing that occurs. (when having vaginal sex you can have sex with someone who has an STD and not get it but i dont recommend this lol).

If we knew the answerI to that question then research could be so much further along in finding a cure. I do not know if it is because of the bodily fluids mixing, or the lack of protection, but what ever the answer is to this question I hope it comes with a advancement toward a cure from this disease.

Our rear ends were not made for that. Sex is reserved in the confines of a marriage between a man and a woman and any other way goes against God's principles. And as a result of our continued sin, new diseases occur and instead of repenting, we try to blame it on other things. Things will just get worse and worse if you don't stop sinning so please do what is right.

I believe that is prejudice. Strait people have AIDS. Gay people have AIDS, black, white, spanish, oriental, AIDS affects all people, it's actually a problem with society and stereotypes that people believe that load of crap.

Same reason it's prevalent amongst the heterosexual population!! It's a disease!! If people don't practice safe sex, or use IV drugs, they can catch it!! Gays & Straight have the disease!! Hell, Innocent children have it. It isn't just us gays you know!! :@)

i don't think it really is anymore. i think that is just a stigma that has carried over from the days when pregnancy was the only real consequence of sex, and STD's were not as big a concern...

Some gay men don't feel the need to use a condom so they have more unprotected sex because they won't get pregnant. The anal tissues also more readily absorb the virus.

People who are gay know they cannot get pregnant with that partner so they have unpretected sex, therefore, get the virus.

Because heterosexuals want to think that gay people are "different" so they get it most.

Because it's easier to be passed on through homosexual intercourse.

from what i understand
its because
uhmmm
they bleed
when they have anal sex
and so yeah.

cause its a gay disease for all u gay freaks
