If I inject a rat with the AIDS virus, then inject it with a concoction (That I made) that I THOUGHT could...?

Possibly cure the AIDS... Could I be charged with animal cruelty?

If so... Why is it that torturing one animal is animal cruelty, but torturing many considered science? (Yea, yea... I know i'm not a scientist... Just wanted to throw out a wild scenario.)

THIS IS TOTALLY HYPOTHETICAL!

Hamster, rat, cow, chicken, duck... IDC. How the heck am I supposed to know what can and cannot contract AIDS? That's not even what I REALLY want answered... The real question here isn't being answered.

Because you're not certified/inspected by the USDA under the Animal Welfare Act or following the procedures and guidelines set forth by the laws that govern laboratory animals.

You see, when a scientist wants to test something new on animals, they have to go to a committee to get the go ahead. The experiment is presented to that group, who then weighs the risks to the animal, potential gain to society (both human and animal), and the 'sentience' of said animal. If the benefits outweigh the downsides, then the go-ahead is given. If not, then the experiment is rejected and the scientist goes back to the drawing board.

But yes, you could be charged with animal cruelty because you didn't follow the proper procedures.

Put it this way. If you stick your hand up a cow's butt for fun, that's cruelty because it distresses the cow but serves no purpose. If you do it check whether she's pregnant, it's an acceptable management technique.

Similarly, you'd be charged with cruelty in your case because the action serves no purpose. You can't 'cure' HIV in rats because they don't contract it to begin with. Thus, your experiment cannot possibly produce useful information. Yes, you do need to explain what you're doing and why before you're allowed to experiment with animals.

they use hamsters as they breed faster..one pair can have a gestation period of 16 days.. methinks..shortest time for any mammal...one pair could have 100,000 off spring in a year..

in the cause of aids ..then maybe ..just maybe..or cancer or whatever..but you have to be a licensed scientist or else you will be nailed as a sadist..a pet killer...i forgot the term for someone who tortures animals....my wife tortures me..and i don't like it..but its legal..

Its because with the mice scenario, you are contributing to something that can change the world in a positive way, instead of just damaging a creature. The animals that fill grocery stores I bet went through hell, but at the same time, humans use them for nurishment. We as a species are at the top of the food chain. No species comes before us.

unless u have either MD or PhD after your name, you cant legally do it. But no one would really find out. And you cant really cure AIDS, its possible to find a vaccination or effective treatment, but not a cure (its a virus)

Since you would not be working in a registered laboratory subject to regulation and inspection, you could be subject to prosecution.

You have to have permission to experiment on animals. Yes you would be in trouble.

Where the hell are you getting the AIDs from?

you killed a rat??!!

nope
rats are things no one but activist care about
