Why do theists and atheists delude themselves constantly that Religion or Science will save them?

Seriously for example a theist might: Pray to God to heal them from heart disease as they continue eating a big-mac. Or once they realise that global warming is occuring and pray for God to fix everything while they still drive their Hummer.

But atheists also do the same... for example: I've come across some atheists that believe science will save humanity from itself, but consider all it would take to wipe out humanity is a lab experiment where a super-strain of Ebola to escape or the Aids virus to mutate, becoming extremely virulent and airborn to kill most of humanity within days... leaving no time to find a cure.

Why are people so pompous and arrogant when it comes to facing potential problems?

Because it's fun.

I don't eat fast food or drive a Hummer. If I had the money for a Hummer, I still wouldn't drive one. I'd much rather have an Audi TT, a Nissan 350Z, or Jaguar XKR coupe. A Nissan Skyline wouldn't be bad, either.

And actually, I believe in having a pro-active faith. I may pray for God to help my health, but at the same time, I'll make changes myself. I may pray for God to help the starving children throughout the world, but I also donate to charity. I may pray for God to strengthen my marriage, but I also try to be a good wife.

I think that people on both sides of the aisle need to take a pro-active approach to life. Theists should not expect God to do things for us that we can do ourselves, and atheists should not put all their faith into science. Sure, maybe someday science will create crops that can grow even when an area is facing a decade-long drought...maybe science can someday create a bottomless water source for all of us...but in the meantime, we should all be doing our part.

You are correct. If you read your Bible carefully there is often the word "repent", which means to turn away from sin.
This is exactly what the Christians you used as way of illustrating aren't doing. The one praying for healing of a heart condition isn't repenting and eating healthy food. The one worried about global warming isn't repenting of not using resources wisely by doing the simple things to help protect the environment and stop global warming.

While I do believe God can do all things, but it is foolish to mock Him . A prayer must be sincere. I think praying for safety from heart disease and testing Him by eating 3000 fat calories a day is foolish and insincere. As far as the fatalistic view you offer regarding science, we will all die. If we do not have confidence when facing life, what is the alternative, fear?

I know of no atheist that believes that science will (or can) save humanity from itself. They believe that only humanity can save humanity from itself. And science can merely provide some of the tools to do so.

If we give it long enough, yes, it will.

It is unlikely that a simple variant on an existing disease could kill ALL humans that quickly. More likely, it would leave at least a few million survivors who would eventually be able to rebuild civilization after the disease died out for lack of host organisms. A special genetically engineered disease is a much more likely possibility, but it seems that by the time the technology to create such super-diseases becomes available, for one thing we will also have ways to stop it or slow it down, and for another thing those with access to the technology probably won't be those who find the total extinction of human life to be an acceptable outcome. I mean, when you look at the closest comparison, nuclear weapons, we are storing thousands of functional nuclear weapons but no one has ever actually used on in war for almost 63 years.

I don't understand why you have to label someone as "pompous and arrogant" who merely uses science and the scientific method to do what can be done to help to deal with the problems facing mankind.

What alternative do you propose? Witchcraft?

Whatever solutions you propose, do you think they will deserve to be labelled "pompous" and "arrogant", or are you plugged into a direct connection to the truth of which everyone else is unaware?

If I were inclined to say deragatory things about others, I might suggest that the most "pompous and arrogant" person in the room is you.
