AIDS: Describe the sequence of events that occurs when this, or any other, virus infects human cells.?

Thanks!

well with aids what happens is a person contracts the HIV virus, or human immuno-deficiency virus. after about 2 weeks the virus presents itself in physical symptoms. your immune system becomes compromised, and as T-cells, the cells that fight off infections, become infected and destroyed, your immune system gradually weakens until you can't fight off the simplest of infections and eventually you will die.

Viruses, such as HIV, infect by binding to specific receptors on the surface of the host cell. They then inject their genomic material into the cell, which (in eukaryotes) can then enter the nucleus and hijack the host cell's replicative machinery - exact details depend on specific viruses. In short, the cell is exploited into making more copies of the virus, which can then exit the cell either via lysis (bursting) or budding. These virions can then infect other cells. Given that HIV infects human CD4+ T cells, we can see how the CD4+ cell population can become decimated in the course of an active infection.

Certain viruses can integrate themselves into the host's genome (lysogeny), until conditions are appropriate for them to switch into the lytic phase.
