I don't know about monkeys but one theory I've come across alleges that the simian variation is carried by chimpanzees. Tribesman who hunted chimps were infected by the blood and/or from eating the meat and the virus underwent an adaptive mutation. There are other theories you can find if you run a search for "theories about the origin of HIV". And AIDS doesn't come from anybody or anything except HIV infection.
