I have this vague plot idea...want to help me develop it?

I got bored of writing my last novel halfway through- I tend to do that a lot- when I thought of a new idea. Only...I can't figure out where to go with it from here.

In the future, the AIDS virus has mutated so it affects only females. Some females, it renders completely infertile. Others, it alters the DNA of their cells (because in real life, AIDS actually does mutate DNA, only not in this way) so that they secrete a new hormone, so that their gender changes- into one never seen before. Now, a child can be born either male, female, or daemale. Daemales tend to have thick hips, flat chests, and round faces- this is the standard for beauty in the future. In the new country, the Unified Republic of Kedron, females born automatically belong to the government. They are looked down upon by everyone because of their worthlessness, as they're infertile. Their options: become a prostitute, become a private pleasurer (aka personal prostitute) for a wealthy man, or go to the fighting pits, which are basically a combination of the gladiators in ancient Greece and the dog fighting pits today. The pits are the main form of entertainment in Kedron. Also, a popular entertainment is to go to the theatre, where you can watch female criminals be tortured as musical songs play. Picture it: a thousand people, males and daemales, gathered as a woman on stage screams in agony as the orchestra cheerfully plays "Sound of Music" to cultured approval and applause. Creepy, but great, eh?

In the story, main character is Melinda, a female who has a younger brother named Owen who she loves. They ran away from the orphanages when Mel was 13 and Owen was 5, living in the woods and stealing what they could. One day they were caught, and Owen was sent to a foster home, Mel sent to the fighting pits. She promised Owen she'd come back, though, so she fights in the pits. It's always a fight to the death, but while Mel is slender, she's also strong and has good instincts, so she's a survivor, heavily bet on in the pits. First scene is when Mel is 17, during a fight scene in which she kills another girl but apologizes to the girl before she kills her, as she always does. Doesn't like killing, and always tries to make it a quick, painless death, but she knows she has to keep fighting so she can one day escape to get back to Owen.

What happens after the first scene? I think I want the government to want to use her for something...but I don't know what. Any help here? Inspiration?

Oh, and the daemale reproductive organ is a single tube outside their body. So you can imagine how they reproduce with males. Male's thing goes inside the tube, etc.

I suggest you look to your character for that question. Picture it - Melinda wants to find her brother Owen but she's stuck there - she must have a crazy plan to escape right? Have it develop in her mind, have her create this plan.

You can always through in a plot twist later but right now she wants to get out.

Listen to your characters. Get to know her favorite things, music, food, drives, etc.

Then just listen and they will tell you what their going to do.

Maybe a really rich weirdo sees her in the fighting pit, and pays promises a lot of money for her to be one of his private pleasurer, and I guess go on from there. :P

Wow. I thought that sounded really, really, really amazing. You should definitely keep going. And, I agree with the first person, she's definitely going to be plotting, and she sounds like a very strong character, make her think of some plan in her head, maybe some flaw in the layout of the building that she's discovered, and then tell of her amazing escape, lots of drama and excitement. I love this idea that you've thought of; very original. =]
