Can animals contract H.I.V or AIDS? |
Something that may be similar or somewhat derivative of the common human virus that is laying scourge to our great nation. Any information that can be of help will be of great value There are zooviruses called SIV and FIV (Simian and Feline respectively) with the same immuno depletive activity. They can not transfer from one species to another though. A cat won't give you his FIV for eg... and that would not give you HIV. They can't contact the HUMAN version, but there are versions for other animals, such as a version of the virus for cats, called Feline Immunodeficiency Virus or FIV, which causes the same kind of disease in cats. first only humans can catch HIV. I just learned there is FIV for felines. When they first "found AIDS" wasn't there a big ta do about some monkeys in Africa? Don't know if it was the same strand, but perhaps it would account for an animal? I'm not sure about most animals, but I am a cat owner and I know that cats have a form of AIDS which Vets call Feline AIDS. If a mother cat contracts Feline AIDS from a stray male (or some such cat who has it), and proceeds to have babies, the kitties will be put down and the momma cat will be fixed. It's called the Feline Immunodeficiency Virus. AKA FIV HIV is a human virus, but chimpanzees can also get HIV infection. It only rarely causes AIDS in chimps, though, whereas in humans where it usually does after a number of years if it is not treated. No animals can't get HIV or AIDS from humans. It's only humans that can get this virus. If you inject a dog or cat with HIV or AIDS, the virus will die. That's why it's called human indificency virus. I do know that animals have their own form of HIV or AIDS. |
