A particularly serious form of the sexually transmitted bacterial disease syphilis has been detected in gay and bisexual U.S. men infected with the AIDS virus, federal health officials reported on Thursday.

Well, it's certainly not good news. Not for anyone gay or straight. But I think our knowledge of epidemiology is just coming into the forefront of science now with SARS AIDS, new strains of TB and this new syphilis and flesh eating disease, west nile virus, hanta disease...the world appears to be ripe for epidemics. One can only hope that science can contain any of these.

I'm not sure. Maybe the drugs used to treat AIDS make the syphilis bacteria immune to current syphilis drugs.
