What's the difference between Fred Phelps and Jeremiah Wright?

Fred Phelps and his Westboro Baptist church are a bunch of psychos that preach hate just the same as Trinity United and Jeremiah Wright. Would anyone support John McCain if he was part of the Westboro Baptist church for 20 years and was extremely close to Fred Phelps and his "God hates fags" sermons? Honestly, I see very little difference between saying God hates fags and white people in the gov't injected blacks with the AIDS virus. both are disturbing and sick claims, yet Obama gets a pass and once he gets the nomination all democrats will rally around him. What a sad day for a once decent party. Harry Truman must be vomiting in his grave.

I didn't see Rev Wright picketing anyone's funeral.

ONe phrase defines the difference: "God damn America."

That condemnation of the nation itself is the difference. While some rightwing ministers might say that this or that happened due to sins of some sort, they would never ask for God to damn the country!

Plus, Wright plays on racial division and victim-hood.

As far as i know no presidential candidate ever attended Phelps church never listened to a sermon or received and endorsement from him! And they never had to lie about it either unlike Mr Obama others have nothing to hide!

McCain would not be the nominee that's for sure.

Phelps is disgusting too. IFFFF he was McCain's' long time associate, mentor and pastor, that would mean that McCain would not get my vote.

Not even close. Phelps goes around protesting funerals of soldiers and people who die from aids. At least the people who hear Wright talk came to see him.

You went off on 2 or 3 different tangents I'm sorry what was your point.

We can agree that Phelps is awful. The rest of your argument is highly speculative. You're assuming not only that Obama will get nominated, but that afterward, all will be forgiven. And you are assuming that, *if* McCain were closely associated with Phelps, he would not get forgiven.

Maybe what you're saying is all valid. But it's hard to make a strong case by comparing two hypotheticals.

I think Wrights statements are a result of many years of frustration,prior to the 60s There were still Jim Crow laws and much more racism than there is today.Rev.Wright if you havent noticed is not a young guy.Now I am neither defending his comments nor am I criticizing them,but I feel maybe from his perspective things havent changed all that much.Unless we walk a Mile in someone elses shoes,we really cannot judge them effectively,i have never been a 60 year old black preacher.I dont believe that he is hateful whatsoever,angry..yes...hostile...of course,and most definately frustrated,and even misguided.I do not see hate anywhere in his speeches.On th eother hand the rev.Phelps spews hate,he even uses the word hate when he states what you type,which I will not repeat.I do not agree with the manner in which Mr.Wright addressed his anger,but some of what he says is true,some may not be.Show me anywhere in the bible where it says we should HATE anyone.It may say things like a man should not lie down with another man,I do not know I am not a biblical scholar,but I challenge anyone to sho me where we are instructed to hate.
As far as Obama getting a pass...first of all those were not his words,he has clearly stated he disagrees with them,to continue to tie him to these words is no different than if someone supporting John McCain said catholics were a gutter religion and assuming that McCain feels the same way.Obama has been grilled everywhere I have looked for the past 5 days,there is no pass,Everyone currently still in the race has now had a supporter say something objectionable,so if we are to be fair than all of these candidates should quit the race,and just leave Bush in office forever.No One is perfect.But I would much rather have a leader who is willing to talk to our enemies,tackle the biggest issues of the day,and dares to dream that we can have a civilized society,where everyone regardless of race,gender,religion,or financial background has the same shot at succeeding than one who wishes to maintain the staus quo.If you are to keep bashing Mr Obama for remarks someone else made then lets hold everyone in this country responsible for everything anyone they know says.Seems kind of ridiculous when I put it that way,but thats how I see what people are doing due to whatever fears or hatreds they may have
