What are the advantages of the using the anti-HIV ELISA to determine HIV exposure?

and what about disadvantages ?

Advantages: quick, cheap, easily automated to screen multiple samples at once and has a very high sensitivity (very rarely misses truly positive samples after the window period).

Disadvantages: specificity is too low to use for positive diagnosis on its own in most populations (about 1 or 2 in a thousand truly negative samples will react "positive", which means that "positive" results need to be followed up by supplementary testing), can miss early infections in the window period.
