I have 3 questions about AIDS, how is HIV transmitted from mother to child? how can it be reduced? and what? |
are three myths of HIV/AIDS? mem55 and KELSEY gave awesome answers...I agree with them totally. Blood from the Birth canal, but mainly through the breast milk. It can be prevented by the Dr. knowing the mother is HIV positive before baby is born, that way when baby arrives there is special meds they can give the baby, to help prevent the baby from getting the virus, also get tested and know so the mother knows weather or not to breast feed. There are lots of fluids involved during child birth... amniotic fluid, blood (from the placenta), breast milk... anyone of these fluids may transmit the virus. In order to prevent transmission from mom to baby, doctor's need to get mom's viral load down as much as possible. The viral load is how many individual HIV viruses are floating around in the body. The lower your viral load, the lower your chances are of transmitting HIV to anyone. If doctor's can get mom on an AIDS cocktail (combination of AIDS drugs) by the third trimester, then the rate of transmission drops to 12%. If the infant is started on AIDS drugs from the time they are born, the virus doesn't have a chance to replicate, and therefore, they never contract the disease. If the coctails are started within the first week or so of life, rate of actually developing the disease drops to just 8%. As far as I know , HIV can be transmitted before the child is born and through breast feeding. It can be reduced if the mother takes certain meds during pregnancy , and feeding the baby formula |
