HIV/AIDS being compared with the Black Plague?

For an APWH project, we are to choose a medical crisis today and compare it to one that happened in history.

I choose AIDS and the Black Plague. I've tried finding out which one has killed more. Several sources state that they were both considered pandemics, but fail to give an estimate on the death tolls. It's harder to find exact death tolls for various reasons [one being that people are dying from HIV/AIDS today] but if anyone can help me, it would be great.

I just attended a speech on AIDS in the black community by a well known national speaker. In her comments she mentioned that someone dies from AIDS every 11 seconds... with it happening that often it has to be hard to have a tally.
