HIV/AIDS up in US Youth, per Yahoo! Could this be a factor?

Perhaps American young people would benefit by hearing more about HIV/AIDS here in the USA, instead of hearing about AIDS only in terms of US aid to OTHER nation's HIV/AIDS programs. Comments?

tx_trott, not sure I get your point about condoms. Condoms LOWER the spread of AIDS; you seem to suggest that they RAISE it, which is incorrect.

Robot, seems to me that "the attitute that it could not happen to them, and there is a false hope that because of advances in HIV/AIDS medicine/treatment" IS lack of education, not some seperate function of youthful rebellion or something. But I'm splitting hairs; your answer is great and I agree with all your points.

Not only does the lack of education and awareness of HIV/AIDS play a role in the rise of new cases amongst young Americans, it's also the stigma attached to it that keeps many from getting tested and not wanting to know they may even have it. Some young people still have the attitute that it could not happen to them, and there is a false hope that because of advances in HIV/AIDS medicine/treatment, young people simply are not taking it as seriously as they should.

Yes, we should do more to raise awareness of this disease and take preemptive measures to stem the spread of it. However, we should still maintain sending adequate aid to other nations with far more serious epidemics. Disease is a global problem that knows no political boundaries and that must be fought both domestically and abroad.

The primary factors are:

a. A pervasive culture of permisiveness and moral relativism.

b. Parents who are more interested in being cool friends rather than caring parents.

Welcome to the unintended consequences of liberalism. At a time when 12-year olds can get free condoms and oral contraceptiives for free at school, AIDS and other STDs are running amok.

Alot of the numbers are distorted to keep the money flowing in that direction. The Recipients of Government funded Research grants are in competition with each other just as are any other entity that feeds off Taxpayers.That is why they group the numbers world wide so it keeps money going abroad.If the numbers are good in just the U.S. then Taxpayers may not be so apt to think its O.K. to send all the money to another continent.I do agree that with the money spent on education in the U.S. that by now the results should be a lower incidents rate than 3rd world countries.
