How does HIV/AIDS effect the nervous system

Well people with AIDS have extremely weakened immune systems so they're at great risk of catching diseases that the average healthy person doesn't even have to worry about.

There is a fatal disease called progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy that occurs in AIDS patients. It causes demyelination of axons... its effect on neurons is comparable to the effects of multiple sclerosis. The virus that causes it occurs in 70% of the regular population and only causes disease in those who have extremely compromised immune systems, like those who have AIDS.

A brain disease that is unique to AIDS is called the AIDS dementia complex. It causes poor concentration, memory loss, motor dysfunction and speech problems. About 10-20% of AIDS patients have AIDS dementia complex.

In addition to what Lauren posted, there are other infections such as Toxoplasmosis and Cryptococcal meningitis which occur more often in HIV positive patients with very low CD4 counts.
