Would natural selection eventually create HIV/AID immune race?

Would natural selection eventually create HIV/AID immune race?

HIV infects immune cells know as lymphocytes. Specifically lymphocytes with a surface receptor known as T4 (aka CD4). These job of these lymphocytes are to co-ordinate the immune response against viruses, bacteria and other infectious agents.

One method of natural selection would be a mutation that changes the T4 cells so that HIV cannot enter the cell. A second would be if a different immune cell took over the function of the T4 lymphocyte. These would be adaptations in the 'host' that would result in a degree of immunity.

Another possibility is that HIV becomes less virulent over time because the more virulent strains are more likely to die with the host. This process called attenuation has been seen historically with diseases such as syphillis. The disease was so virulent when first introduced to Europe that people died before having a chance to pass it on, and consequently the bacteria died too, leaving only the weakest strains to be passed on.

The time required for any of these changes is enormous, probably thousands of years at a minimum. It is much more likely in my opinion that a vaccine or effective cure would be found sooner.

Natural selection is based upon a pre-existing genetic factor which works to create a resistance in the host to a specific infection agent. CCR5 seemed to do just that, in a very few hosts, and made them somewhat resistant to the infection from HIV/AIDS. Unfortunately it makes the host much more susceptible to "West Nile Fever", which is endemic to the areas of the world where HIV seems to be the worst. Virtually everyone with this genetic trait, dies of west nile fever, so it is hard to tell if they would survive an aids infection. It has been estimated that in excess of 60 million people will die by 2015. So as of now, it does not appear there are any known genetic factors which would allow for the 'natural selection' to function. Good question

defanition of natural selection: the process by which forms of life having traits that better enable them to adapt to specific environmental pressures, as predators, changes in climate, or competition for food or mates, will tend to survive and reproduce in greater numbers than others of their kind, thus ensuring the perpetuation of those favorable traits in succeeding generations.

my opinion, yes, because eventualy, people will get smart and make healthy choices about who we "do it" with, so STDs will stop being spread. Therefor the HIV/AIDs, in my opinion will die out.

this may sound like science fiction but there are people who in a sense are immune to the HIV virus. These individuals do contract the HIV virus but it stays in its latent form their entire lives and never develops into AIDS. Research being done on these people have found this amazing discovery: the ancestors of these individuals survived the Plague that swept across Europe, aka the black plague. Also there is a way to keep the HIV virus latent but if companies such as Merk Inc. manufactured it, it would not be cost efficient. E.g. $40 per pill for Nausea with multiple side effects for cancer patients on chemo; But, these same patients could smoke Marijuana and feel just fine with no side effects besides euphoria and short term memory loss for approximately 2 hours.

because after the weak parts of the virus are destroyed the strong ones stay and they "reproduce" make more of the resistant bacteria soon the whole body will be made up of the Antibiotic resistant bacteria and if that person pasess the disease to another person and another and so on they will all be contaminated with the Antibiotic resistant bacteria
therefore natural selection is a part of this because the antibiotic resistant bacteria stay and reproduce

I dont think so. You have to be exposed to it for hundreds of years. Like small pox. White men from england came over and gave it to the indians because the indians didnt have immunity to it. English people did because they had been dealing with it for hundreds of years. But eventually i think it might. But its an auto immune disease so thats questionable

Yes, actually. Cats (house-cats, lions, tigers, etc.) have their own form of "HIV". It started a really long time ago, and now, most cats that have it are immune to it, and it doesn't really do anything to them. So I would imagine eventually we would become something like that.

It's doubtful, since HIV does not cause immediate death, and it is possible to have HIV negative children when you're positive (something like 97%, if precautions are taken) so you would pass on your non-immunity.

not really sure what you meant by natural selection.... but last I heard, they found a group of people that's naturally immune to the HIV virus. I believe there will be a cure one day.

Either that or aids could evolve into superaids. This is entirely possible, viruses do it all the time.

The African population will be the first to be wiped out by AIDS if any. But I do believe that one day they will find a cure for it.

why not just control ourselves and not have unprotected sex or anonymous sex?

I guess, if all that was real.

Or HIV can just get more complicated!

desperation, with starvation and maybe sexation.

i think the virus will outsmart us :-(
