Aids, why is evryone so scared?

The rate of AIDS and HIV is less than .1 percent? why is everyone so very scared, you are FAR more likely to be hit by a bus, train or even lightning kill you.

In the US HIV prevalence is a bit over 0.3%; in South Africa more than 10%.

0.1% is about right for Australia, Canada and the UK. The figures are higher for the sexually active than for the very old or the very young.

While nobody is at absolutely zero risk of HIV infection, the risk is higher for some people than for others: it depends on what you are doing and who you are doing it with. National prevalence figures are overall estimates: they don't tell you much about the risk of specific situations.

The important point is that new HIV infections are nearly all preventable by making good choices. All life activities including having sex involve some degree of risk: the trick is to realistically assess the risk levels and benefits of different situations and make sensible choices accordingly.

Part of the problem is that sexual situations don't always lend themselves to that kind of clear, logical decision making. Most people have only enough blood* for optimal function of their brains, or their sexual organs, but not both simultaneously. That is why it is so important to think about what are acceptable and unacceptable risks for you BEFORE you get into bed with someone.

Most HIV infections (and other STIs and unwanted pregnancies) are the result of someone underestimating or being ignorant of their level of risk. On the other hand, going into a flat panic is not that helpful either. You need to find a balance.

yea but getting hit by a bus , train or lightning is INSTANT DEATH, therefore you won't feel much pain before death. AIDS is something that would drive your mind crazy and you would continue to wonder when it will kill you. I would much rather be hit by a bus or a train than to have AIDS.

There is no cure for AIDS or HIV. Eventually, AIDS will kill you.
