Why does swaziland have such a high HIV/AIDS rate? (38%)?

The problem in Africa is governments failing to overcome conservative attitudes regarding sex and marriage, and poverty causing prostitution. Another problem is drug companies. We need cheap, generic drugs to help treat people affordably.

The abstentionists really don't help matters. It is human instinct to have sexual relations. Telling people to refrain from it is unrealistic. It solves nothing. The people need educating. They have already been educated, but with the wrong facts. They also need a good supply of condoms.

There are quite a few reasons, as for Africa as a whole not necessarily Swaziland on its own.

Poverty - not everyone affords condoms, even some/most sex workers

Ignorance - not everyone acknowledges the epidemic exists

Lack of education - look at the continent's literacy rate.

Tradition - the very common and legal polygamy, condoms are associated with promiscuity which is very much looked down on.

More accurate estimates - Due to the high death rate, more people are tested, unlike western nations, very few people are tested

Low condom use, uncircumcized men, high amount of prostitution in small areas and truck routes, other untreated diseases that facilitate transmission, lack of education and worst of all: re-using syringes in hospitals.

When I have been in third world countries, condoms still cost $1 each. When you make a few dollars a day a dollar for a condom is a lot.



There is also a genetic component to AIDS, which makes it easier for some people to catch it and some poeple immune. About 5% of Europeans are immune.

because they have sex without protection, and they get pregnant while infected with HIV infecting their babies. some also say mosquitoes carry the virus. lack of education on the subject
