Well all the effort may be concentrated on stopping the spread of the HIV virus which eventually leads to AIDS, which is understandable given it is incurable. However it is rather the curable or preventable diseases that top the charts so far as deaths are concerned. Malaria has been top of the list of killer diseases in Africa for a while now, to that you can add cholera, Typhoid which result from the contamination of drinking water.

HIV and AIDS are the same thing - HIV is the virus that causes it, and AIDs is what they call the progressing disease.
But malaria will kill people more than AIDS in a given year.
Also hepatitis of all kinds, dysentary food poisoning, cholera, and starvation and wars which are a constant feature on the Great Continent.
