Some people are immuned to HIV (or is it AIDS?) can we use them to create a vaccination?

Please answer only if you're a medical professional or medical student

CK grad school poli sci class, professor said it has been found (in Germany) some people who are immuned to HIV. Was she wrong? I would take your word over hers as you are a pharmacist

SOME people are immune to HIV . . . .
SOME people - as like 1 in 100,000.

First, you would have to FIND these people. That would take a huge amount of testing, and a budget equal to that of a medium sized country.. Then, you would have to PROVE their immunity. More testing.

And then, there is always the possibility that their immunity to HIV is based on their immune system. This type of ailment cannot be vaccinated for -- like diabetes.

since the numbers are SOO small, it is VERY unlikely that this path would EVER produce a reliable cure.

HIV is the virus, AIDS is the disease when your T cells fall to a certain level. There is no immunity against HIV. The vaccine has been in the works for a long time but nothing has come to the public yet.

Our school nurse (I go to school in Moses Lake, WA) said that there is no vaccination for HIV or AIDS!

As far as I know, from what I've learned, no one is immune to HIV, the virus that can lead to AIDS. Anyone who engages in certain behaviors, including unprotected sex or sharing needles for drug use, is at risk. (HIV can also be transmitted from a woman to her child during pregnancy, delivery, or breastfeeding.) That said, HIV is not transmitted 100% of the time. Someone could have sex with an infected person 100 times and not get infected, or they could have sex with an infected person only ONCE and be infected.

Lack of a cure at this point is mostly due to the fact that the virus mutates (changes) so much.

Education about risk factors, and the ways HIV is and is not transmitted, is critical in preventing the spread of HIV. Many people still believe that homosexuality and IV drug use are the only risk factors. Others believe it is transmitted by casual contact. Some people believe "It can't happen to me." Also, it is important for people to realize that it is very common for people who have HIV to feel and appear to be completely healthy for years before having symptoms, but people can transmit the virus to others within 24 hrs after getting infected themselves.

Condom use and abstinence from sex and drugs are the best methods of prevention.

Although there is no cure, many people with HIV are able to live healthier, longer, with appropriate treatment.
