Is there a way to get over hypochondria?

I am a hardcore hypochondriac - It seems like every 3 minutes I'm worried about tumors, STD's, HIV/AIDs, diseases & cancer. Its really making a mess of my life honestly, because I find myself worrying more than there are hours in the day. My question is; Is there a way to get over hypochondria that doesn't involve prescriptions or doctors of any kind?

The best way is to go to therapy. Meds wont do you any good as there are no meds that directly help with hypochondria. it is under the mental illness category so a clinical psychologist is the best person to go to if youre a hypochondriac. its best to get properly diagnosed. I have a case of hypochondria that is related to my OCD. you can try to get better on your own but it looks like that hasnt been working fo you so maybe you should try getting help. good luck :)

There is recovery, of course. But no one said it is easy. Hypochondria is a coping mechanism in many cases, years and years of hypochondiac thinking invades every area of your like and begins to have consequences that make you unhappy.

When the reasons for beginning to think this way are diminished, when your life and surroundings become "safe" you may begin the healing process. We have to learn to take the focus off disease and put it back on ourselves where it belongs.

The first step is to admit that you are powerless over your hypochondria and that your life is unmanageable. Most hypochondriacs never get to this conclusion, so you are well on your way!
Step two is believing that a power greater than you can restore you to your sanity.
Step 3 is made a decision to turn your will and your life over to the care of God as you understand Him.

AA's 12-Steps are working in many other forms of addictive thinking and behavior, with success.

The 12-Step groups can help you immensely. They are free. Al-Anon family groups is a good place to start. The listing for Alcoholics Anonymous is a free number in the phone book; a member can happily give you the phone number of an Al-anon member close to you and will tell you where your local meetings are.
