Is it true that washington DC has a high percentage of HIV/AIDS? |
do you know why and the exact percentage? thanks :) At least 3 percent of District residents have HIV or AIDS, a total that far surpasses the 1 percent threshold that constitutes a "generalized and severe" epidemic, according to a report released by health officials on March 16, 2009. As stated by others, D.C. has a high percentage of residents with HIV/AIDS. This is due to a number of factors including intravenous drug use, and a high incidence of poverty. Contrary to what Don W said, heterosexuals (particularly African Americans) have the highest rate of HIV transmission in DC. This is a result of a number of factors... First, for many years the U.S. Congress (which has control over DC) prohibited the local government from implementing programs to reduce HIV transmission, including needle exchanges and government-funded condom distribution. This undoubtedly raised the level of HIV infection. Second, the poverty levels in Washington are second only to rural Mississippi; research shows that higher levels of poverty increases the risk of exposure to HIV/AIDS. Third, D.C. has a prevalent "down low" culture in which "straight" men (primarily African Americans) have unprotected sex with other men. These men then spread the virus to their wives or girlfriends, contributing to the high level of HIV infection in the community. The unwillingness of DC's black community to discuss this epidemic (mostly due to religious and cultural taboos) has also contributed to the ever-increasing rate of HIV infection. Yes, it does. I don't know the exact numbers. Yes it does. Probably its 3% about 3% of the people in DC have HIV/AIDS yep |
