Why does the Media make a big deal about Aids/ Hiv than diabetes?

In my opinion Diabetes is just as bad as Aids

Good question. There are more than six times more deaths per year due to diabetes than AIDS. The real question is, why is there such a fuss over the so called swine flu? There have been fewer than 150 deaths from swine flu, so far this season, yet it has dominated the headlines for months.

Diabetes deaths per year: 75,000
AIDS deaths per year: 12,000
Swine flu so far: 141

It all has to do with selling hysteria, my friend.

Yes, I agree that both are huge deals. I think it's because HIV and AIDS are a rapidly growing epidemic that it spread easily and often, and there isn't anything you can do to prevent it if you have sex or share a needle with an infected person. Also, because there's a certain death with AIDS that can't be controlled...like, your t cells drop, you catch a cold, and that's it. Diabetes, while also life threatening and very serious, is not necessarily fatal and there are steps you can take to prevent it and treat it. Also, AIDS is a fairly new thing, and diabetes has been around for a long time. People see AIDS as this new, mystery epidemic, which is why they make a big deal out of it, and diabetes is "old news" to them. But, yeah, I agree, people should make equally big deals because they are both extremely serious.

Strangely enough, I have seen a lot of talk about diabetes, especially amongst the younger age groups. The media is ALL OVER it now. They are nearly consumed with how young children are diabetic and try to find explanations (like we all do) as to why certain kids have it and why the numbers of patients are increasing.

I certainly think they present diabetes in kids/parent magazines, but in a different way than "adult-oriented" periodicals.

SO, I actually DON'T hear a lot about HIV/AIDS compared to diabetes. But that is because I have 3 kids and I don't have time to watch the news or read "adult-oriented" periodicals. However, I will say that when I have heard about HIV/AIDS it is always talked about as a "lifelong condition." Which, I would argue that diabetes is a lifelong condition as well.

I'll tell you why. It's because AIDS is sex related, and everyone knows how sex fuels the media. If diabetes were sex related, you would hear a lot more about it.

I certainly would never downplay the devastation of AIDS. It is a horrible, horrible condition and my heart breaks for anyone who has it or has lost someone to it. But certainly, diabetes research should be so lucky as to get the funding that some of these other conditions that aren't as prevalent receives.

Haha...When I was diagnosed with diabetes I would have been more ready to hear I had AIDS than to hear I had diabetes...

I couldn't find any other explanation for the fact I had come down with the flu 3 times in 7 weeks. I think I was far more shocked to find out to have diabetes than I would have been to find out I had HIV. At least I was somewhat ready to hear the bad news. But WHAM out of nowhere--I have diabetes...wtf.

Diabetes is apparently far more common than HIV. At least from my experience...Either way, the protocol is pretty clear as to how to prevent HIV.

And--yes-- it is all about selling hysteria. Because both are curable. There are also bigger problems and diseases plaguing us like Hep C is quite a bigger competitor to HIV because it does spread quite more easily than HIV...50% of the prison population has Hep C. Most who do time don't spend their life in prison. They get out and interact with the rest of the world...

I think it's mainly because HIV, unlike diabetes, is contagious and is spreading rapidly...mostly in the 16-25 age group.

Yes, both are bad. I can't disagree with you there. However, there have been advances in both diseases that are setting us on the path...I hope...to cures. Someday...

Unfortunately, they are both serious life-threatening conditions that destroy people's lives. Diabetes & HIV require more medical research to help us find a cure although there are some natural medicines that may make our lives just a little more bearable.

Because it sells papers. The media talks about what people want to read about.
