Is lying about having AIDS/HIV punishable by law in Australia, somewhere else in the world?

Well, is it?
Cause I'm into one night stands for the moment, and maybe a little bit of dating and I might be worried about catching an STD not to mention HIV, so is protected sex a guaranteed way not to catch any of those?

Would it be appropriate to ask someone on the first date about their health status (STD, HIV)?

I know that in America, and many countries, it is illegal for someone who knows they have HIV to have unprotected sex with other people without telling them about the infection. It may be considered attempted murder, manslaughter, or other things, depending on location.

Condom use is very effective in preventing transmission of HIV and other STDs, but not 100%.

Re: your other question: Yes, you can ask your partner about their health, but unfortunately, some people will lie about their sexual history or about whether or not they've been tested, and just tell you what you want to hear- ("Yes I have been tested, No I don't have HIV or any other STDs.") It is always appropriate to ask your partner to get tested. You can suggest getting tested together. If your partner is offended or upset in any way by your request, he/she is either hiding something, or does not care about you. (However, if you discuss these issues on a FIRST date, your partner may feel that you are putting pressure on them to have sex.)

Linda R's answer is good. I just wanted to add that condoms do not guarantee against herpes, due to the fact that its passed via skin to skin contact, & may be present in areas not protected by the condom i.e. on thighs, on labia (if on outside of labia it could infect testicles, or base of penis where the condom can't protect), it could also be transmitted by putting condom on, if the area was infected was touched first! As one in four is estimated to have herpes it's worth considering. Also some people can shed the virus whilst being asymptomatic (not having visible sores) so be careful!

Yes, its considered manslaughter in many countries. Yes protected sex holds zero risk. As the pathogen is to big to pass the latex. As the second one, Its possible they will be offeneded.
