What do you think of women using the anti-lactation drug?

A drug developed for mothers with HIV is being prescribed for women who don't want to breastfeed/want to keep their figures and/or who want to return to work quickly and not have to deal with engorgement.

What do you think about the use of this?
Would you use it?

People are calling for it to be available to all pregnant women via the NHS. Do you think this cause a decrease in breastfeeding? The drug can be taken whilst pregnant, meaning the mother would never have the opportunity to even try to breastfeed.

Milk Maid - I hated that statement too, so many impressionable people will read that and now think formula is pretty much equal to breastmilk.

I think it is Absolutely ludicrous! I believe every baby deserves human milk! This statement from the article is particularly disturbing:
'There is not enough difference between breast milk and infant formula to make a fuss about it.'
The only similarity between breast milk and infant formula is that they can sustain fledging human life. The similarities end there!

Personally I would never use it. I absolutley loved breastfeeding my son for the amount of time that I did. I felt that I was giving him something that no one else could give him and it was a rewarding experience.

Of course my breasts are different now, but I still would love to breastfeed my next child. I would never use this.

I also have nothing against mothers who formula feed as my son is on formula now. I wasn't able to continue breastfeeding as long as I wanted to and had to switch him on to formula.

In my opinion it seems that some women are taking the easy way out of things now instead of the natural way.

it used to be common practice for women not bfeeding to take a pill when they had babies to dry up milk; i think it is an individual right to make an informed decision if they want to take the drug....i don't want anybody telling me what i can do with my body, ever; so i respect everyone else's right to choice....

i WOULD NEVER use a drug like that. But it is up to the individual women to make that choice for herself. As for if it would cause a decrease in breastfeeding maybe. Most women know before they give birth if they are even going to try to breastfeed or not. Just add it to the growing list of reasons a person chooses to breastfeed or not.

Some women lactate very irregularly or the baby has special dietary needs as far as difficulty in digestion or nutrition. Some women think breast feeding is too unreliable to depend on. A lot of women try to tough it out for 3 mos. for the benefits to the child. Formula eases their mind and helps them manage their time and energy levels to better cope with the baby needs and life in general. Making a woman feel guilty about not being 100% natural is the goal of a lot of religious and political organizations. They need to get a life.

Creepy... I would not use this, even if I had decided not to breastfeed. Sometimes I wonder if we actually know the long term effects of the stuff we put into our bodies.
While I respect a woman's choice not to breastfeed, I think it's kind of creepy to take drugs to dry up. What if they changed their mind and decided last minute that they'd like to try breastfeeding?

I agree that it is their choice. I chose not to breast feed either child but I still wouldn't take a drug for vein reasons while pregnant. i would only take something unless I had too. I had the flu once with my oldest son and didn't take anything for that too. Same with my head aches.

I think that people have the right to do what they like with their own bodies. Women who are likely to breastfeed will do so even if drugs like this are available...those who won;t, wont....simple as that. Why worry over what other women choose to do with their bodies?

It would be her choice. Just like those who choose to formula feed...it's their choice.

Sad. Just: sad.

I don't think it will make much of an impact on the amount of women who do not breastfeed, at least long term.

Why shouldn't a woman who chooses not to breastfeed (for whatever reason), not be able to seek relief from pain? Or should we rather be creating drugs to punish mothers more?

I would not consider taking the drug unless it had been out for long enough to show possible side effects and be deemed okay.

My mother did not breastfeed me and had pills to dry up her milk. I breastfed my daughter for 6 months and her weaning was somewhat gradual, so I never went through very much pain/engorgement, but I would have liked to have a drug to help me if I had.

If women can have access to birth control or even abortion, why on Earth would we object to this?

I think that just like women have the right to breastfeed, women have the right NOT to.
I didn't and am not going to this time, and I don't think that anyone should have the right to tell me that I need to.
Personally, I wouldn't go as far as taking a pill to stop milk from coming in, but I wouldn't see ANYTHING wrong with someone doing it. I mean, we take birth control to prevent ovulation....its along the same lines right? Just as we have the right/choice to stop ourselves from even having a baby in the first place, we certainly shouldnt be looked down for taking the option of a pill that would stop milk from comming in should we choose that.
=)

I don't see nothing wrong with it, this is the 21st Century & we already do such outrageous things for our body's. Who would under go surgery to get rid of the stretch marks? i know i would, call me vain but if i could take a drug knowing i wasn't going to breastfeed anyway & it was gonna help my chest look good again then yeah why not, i'll take it. We change so much about our bodies anyway. There is an illegal injection out for a permanent tan, women take that! hell i would if i knew where to get it from & it was medically approved. I'm sure i will get thumbs down but pregnancy took its toll on my body & why it don't bother me i still want nice boobs, tum & bum, & id take a drug to get it too. & wheen you make a choice not to breastfeed whats the harm in making it go quicker, its gonna go anyway
