I learn that a new drug that cures HIV/AIDS has just been discovered, what is its Name?

There is no cure for HIV/AIDS.

What you may have heard of is Post Exposure Prophylaxis (PEP).

If a person has been exposed to HIV, they can go to an emergency room/doctor's office within 72 hours of that exposure and ask to be placed on PEP.

PEP is a combination of drugs that are normally given to people who are already HIV+.

If taken within the 72 hour window, the CDC states that there is strong evidence indicating that a significant number of people will not contract HIV.

If a person goes to a doctor after the 72 hour period, they will not be given PEP because there is overwhelming evidence to indicate that it will do no good whatsoever.

It is very difficult to get a prescription for PEP. Generally, a person must state that they know that their partner was HIV+ or have been the victim of sexual assault. In some cases, such as unprotected anal sex or needle sharing with partners of unknown status PEP would be prescribed.

If you went to a doctor and said that you had oral sex with someone and did not know their status, they would (at the very least they should not) prescribe PEP.

Even though PEP has been shown to be effective, it is not a cure for the disease and it does not always work.
