Should the NHS be funding needle exchange programmes in order to provide drug addicts with their paraphernali? |
The reason given would be that in the long-term it saves money as it cuts down on the number of cases of HIV and Hepatitis and other infections. Any thoughts on the morality of this? It's interesting to see our NHS putting it's hand in it's pocket to hand out condoms to children and needles to junkies, whilst it chooses to deny medicines to sick people based on cost! When someone is at the point of injecting drugs, they are at the height of addiction, depression and a very miserable life. I am assuming you have never know anyone who is a drug addict? well let me tell you that all drug addicts start out the same as alot of other people, smoking a joint or taking the odd ecstasy pill, only they get drawn into something that they cannot control and it starts a nightmare for them and their families. I think the NHS providing needles to addicts is absolutely justified, it cuts down in intravenous diseases not to mention HIV, and whilst the people get these needles they are also provided with advice and support to help them kick the habit. Drug addicts are people to who have taken a bad path, but are in need of serious help and not judgement Yes. Before the needle exchange started drug addicts still used but they re-used needles and shared needles. I don't think the needle exchange is giving out the impression that it is ok to be addicted to drugs. People see junkies as no hopers who do not care what happens to them but the fact that they are using clean needles proves that they choose life. It is to hard a job to stop the drug taking, impossible some would argue, so the needle exchange is just one of the stratergies put in place to improve the sittuation |
