Infected in the military?

I always wondered.

what exactly happens when someone in the military who upon enlistment was clean as a whistle but later then gets infected or contracts, lets say HIV positive or any type of threatening disease like hepatitis c.

does he get kicked out or what... what are the procedures after the infection..im not in the military nor am i infected with any disease i was just always curious

not always an automatic discharge. typically they are allowed to finish their contract but not permitted to re enlist. occasionally they get to finish 20 years and retire if close enough( usually with 3-5 years of retiring)

BTW..mandatory yearly testing for HIV.

I think what would most likely occur is a medical separation. This means an administrative separation under honorable conditions. Now the key here is was the infection due to the military. The military may pay for your medical for life if it is found to be service related. However due to the nature of HIV/ Hep C and the need (for the most part,) for there to be some action on your own part to get the disease the military may say they had nothing to do with it and here is your honorable discharge good luck! A medical review board may be needed to figure out a medical retirement vs admin separation. A few unknowns and depending on scenario will change the outcome.

they don't get kicked out, but they will be ineligible for assignment oversees, deployment, and placement in certain units and jobs. they can still re-enlist, as long as they meet all the guidelines for reenlistment. i'm not sure if all that applies to hep-c though.
