Difference between STI and STD? |
I know they are both sexually transmitted and that the politically correct term for something that can be treated and cured with medication is suppose to be called and STI. But when I was doing an assignment for a health class and everyone in there kept calling HIV an STI. I always thought an STI was an infection that could be gotten rid of with the use of antibiotics. Am I wrong or were they just confused? STI and STD refer to the same thing--diseases or infections that are transmitted sexually. Whether or not an infection is curable does not change the fact that it can be called an STD or an STI. The title comes from the way it is transmitted, not whether or not it can be cured. Herpes and HIV are both viruses which can be treated, but can not be cured. Other STDs are bacterial and can be cured with antibiotics. Sexually Transmitted (Infection / Disease), no difference. Just a new age term....back in the day they called stds/sti's VD(veneral disease) how broad is that! i believe that they are just different terms for the same thing, but i can understand your logic. |
