I live in a tough neighborhood in Puerto Rico.....?

there are alot of sick people walking about who are heavily addicted to drugs. it's just a way of life here. there's a theft problem and crime is out of control. PR's currently a bit of a mess, regrettably....i digress

that said, i have two boys that i love tremendously :) - one's a bassett hound and the other's a weimeranner. they both stay outside in the gated yard and act as great watchdogs. the bassett's loud, the wiemeranner's intimidating.

My question is: since there's alot of people in the neighborhood who are intravenus drug users, there's a high propensity that someone could have HIV/AIDS. if one were to hop the fence and get into my yard and my weimeranner were to bite this person,
(1) is there possibility of infection for the dog?
(2) can the dog somehow be a carrier without being infected?
(3) will the dog be completely UN-affected?

any help you can give me would be wonderful. thank you.

and NO...i can't move from PR at this moment :)

also, is there some kind of canine version of this illness?

No, HIV is very host specific and is actually a very fragile virus. It does not transfer between host animals and cannot be transmitted by other animals (if it could be, the most likely vector would be mosquitoes and HIV would be a lot more dangerous). HIV cannot survive outside a human host for very long at all which is why it requires something close to insertion into it's new host and cannot be aquired casually by touch.
I suppose that if your dog were to bite an infected person and then immediately bite you then there might be a possibility of him passing it to you.
There's nothing that the dogs can aquire from these people that is dangerous.

the best advice I can give to you would be maybe a higher fence. also talk to your vet about the disease. good luck with your two boys

as far as they know, pets cannot get aids. there is an immune disease that cats can have, but i dont think its tranferable between species. viruses are tropic which means that they are very specific about the cells they can infect. Therefore it is rare for human viruses to infect animals and vice versa.
Even with monkeys, the AIDS virus that they are infected with is not HIV (human immunodeficiency virus), they use SIV or simian immuno. virus.

I think you should move to a new neighborhood.
