Medical PLS!?

Situation: you are a medical student and you have diagnosed a pt. with a positive result for HIV/AIDS.

While caring to this patient you accidentally pricked by the infected needle you've used to him. What then is your next action to protect you from not acquiring the disease? (is there a chance of NOT acquiring the Disease).
While waiting for the incubation period of the disease (5-10 years)- what should i DO to at least prepare me not to have such infection...
(I would greatly appreciate people who will help solve this question. pls?).
..

First is to squeeze the pricked area to make it bleed as much as possible and run the area under hot water with soap. Next is to report the incidence to HR who will draw your blood and the patient's. They will place you on a drug cocktail if the patient is positive as you have stated. Take these drugs as ordered. Make sure you inform any sexual partners of this and use a condom, don't share toothbrush or razors. You should continue on the drug cocktail until your final blood test is negative.

Good luck.

If you are accidentally pricked from a needle used in an HIV positive patient your risk of acquiring HIV is 0.3%. There is no such thing as 0 risk. The risk of infection is also dependent on what kind of needle (hollow-bore) and depth of penetration. It also depends on the HIV viral load of the patient.
The recommendation for needle stick exposure is three anti-retrovirals for one month....for more info....go to
center for disease control website in US and look under post-exposure prophylaxis.

Just to add to the other correct answers........

To be effective treatment should begin within an hour, of possible infection but no longer than 72 hours later

well as soon as you felt the prick did you go and wash your hands?
too, go a head and be tested now, then again in 6 months, nad maybe 6months after that. and if they each come back negative i think you may be ok.

or on the other habd i would get down on my knees and meet the LORD JESUS, and be praying to him that you dont have the infection.

good luck and i will be praying for you
