Can you get infections from oral?

Can you get any infections or diseases from oral sex? I know my boyfriend hasn't been with any other girl because we're still both young, so I'm not talking about HIV and stuff, but if he is licking me down there could I catch anything from the bacteria in his mouth? And if I'm giving him oral, should we use a condom?

He definitely hasn't slept with anyone else, I know that, and neither have I, so we both know we don't have gonorrea or anything like that.

Hello:
This is in response to your question posted concerning oral sex and infections. As far as getting infections from either receiving or performing oral sex, yes you can transmit gonorrhea, chlamydia, HIV, HPV (human papilloma virus) and possibly other infections that are not usually considered sexually transmitted. Your comment about being "young" doesn't preclude either one of you from contracting or transmitting STD's. In fact, the largest, fastest growing population of new HIV infections is in the age group 16-24 years old. Now if both of you were virgins when you met and you are sure neither of you has been with anyone else then you are highly unlikely to have any infections. You wouldn't believe how many teens do not consider oral sex having sex but it is. As far as "catching anything from the bacteria in his mouth", it is highly unlikely that you would get anything from him. I treat a lot of people, especially young patients 16-30 years of age for sexually transmitted diseases. The only thing that comes to mind is that if he is a carrier of Group B strep, he can transmit that to your vagina and the only problem with that is, if you get pregnant, the bacteria can cause miscarriages, stillbirths or serious life-threatening infections in the newborn. Now as far as using a condom, the answer is YES. You should use a condom 100% of the time with coitus (penetration) and oral sex. Gonorrhea can cause a severe form of pharyngitis (infection of the throat, kind of like strep throat) but much worse. There is a theoretical possibility that one can transmit HIV through saliva but the risk is very, very low. The normal bacteria in all humans mouths usually cannot be transmitted to the vagina unless you have a cut or abrasion (a break in the skin in and around your vagina/clitoris/urethra) and if you do get an infection from it, it is usually a mild urinary tract infection that can easily be treated with antibiotics. You would know if you had a urinary tract infection because it would be very uncomfortable when you urinate, there could be a foul odor to your urine, you may see blood in the urine, feeling like you have to pee all of the time, back pain, and feeling like you are not finishing urinating when you go to the bathroom.
I hope this was helpful in answering your questions and I think you are very intelligent and curious to ask such a sensitive question over the internet.
Best regards,
Warren Shaffer, M.D.

Gonorrhea.

Yes, of course.

You can catch pretty much the same things from oral sex that you can from sex. You need to talk to your doctor about all of this. Just because he's young doesn't mean he hasn't slept with anyone else!!!!

Yes. Always use protection. Both ways.

Absolutely. Go talk to your doctor. If he has a cold, he can give you a bacterial infection. Heck, he can do that if he hasn't brushed his teeth. if you don't know these dangers, you shouldn't be doing any of this.

You can get just about any disease. You are transferring fluids through tissue that easily absorbs pathogens.

hepatitis B, hepatitis C and cytomegalovirus (CMV).

Yes you can pass herpes! That is forever!

Yes...it is called oral sex...all sex should be protected unless you want to be diseased and nasty...keep yourself clean...

You can get herpes type 1. Get a test before you do anything, oral sex is still sex and you can catch things too-

Herpes, syphilis, gonorrhea, genital warts (HPV), intestinal parasites (amebiasis), and hepatitis A.

Yes, use a condom. And you can never be absolutely sure that your boyfriend hasn't been with anyone else. Protect yourself!

yes

You can spread most sexual diseases through oral sex as well as intercourse.....you're sharing bodily fluids.
For your own protection, you should take precautions no matter what sexual activity you care to do.

Yes, you can get infections.

Don't ever assume that you are someone's first, or that they're not carrying any STI's. Use a condom every time.

You can get urinary tract infections if you don't pee after receiving oral sex. You can also get vaginal infections, if he inserts his fingers into you, and they're not clean.

Use a condom if you give a guy oral. You don't know if he could be carrying HIV. There are no visible symptoms.

you should always use a condom in any type of sex and yes you can catch an infection

You again! if you use a condom, neither of you will like it. Yeah you can catch stuff, if it's there to be caught; the most likely is thrush I guess. I don't think the bacteria are a problem but I'm no medic, just a guy that goes down a lot.

Yeah.

I don't really know, but i would be careful,
that is a tough question, but mostly sex diseases, are from intercourse.

Please understand what you are asking. There are a lot of people young and old that believe that nothing can happen to them for practicing this.
Yes, you can get a bacteria infection if you do not clean in that area. This applies to both of you.
Infection can come in many forms, and not all appear instantly or within a few days. The body can hold infections for a long time.
If this is something you wish to practice then ask him to use the proper sanitary items such as plastic wrap and you can use the same for him.
If you are still unsure talk to with doctor or do more research on Web MD.com

Yes, our mouths are filthy with bacteria we dont even trhink or know about. A good teeth brushing and an anaceptic rinse will cut down on infection alot. Be careful.

yes

yes, you can get anything
