Good question!
There are several factors that determine the fact that how long the person will survive after an initial infection.
Right attitude is the key component which include accepting the fact that he/she has got the infection, compliance to the anti-retro-viral therapy and the counselling services, and very importantly life style modification which includes abstinence from smoking and alcohol, taking well balanced diet and moderate exercise.
These victims need a support group that they can meet regularly and share their experience of being a victim of this dreadful disease.
Counselling is an important part in which the victims are assisted to identify their potentials and empowered to take decision that are related to their treatment and life.
As the disease progress to the advanced stage, they and their family need more support mentally and the spiritual need should be met when appropriate.
Many times, the victims are socially stigmatised and isolated from the friends and family which is one of the main reasons that the clients get poor access to treatment and counselling. Hence, a right attitude from the society too plays a vital role for prolonging the life of the client.
With the right attitude and treatment, the victims may live up to another 10 to 12 years. However, individuals are unique in this matter.
