Protease inhibitors- how many are there?

I am wondering how many protease inhibitors there are? Are the ones being used for hiv infection effective- are they natural or man made by drug companies?

I think this site will answer your questions. I didn't read all of it, so I will throw this into the answer: I believe there are currently 3 proteases.

All these protease inhibitors are man made. Effectiveness of these drugs is dependent on mutation rates of the virus. The most common inhibitors are based on viral mutations that happened awhile ago. If new DNA mutations occur (which is common with viruses) then a new drug would be needed to counteract the new protein. (Just as a side note, not all viral DNA mutations make functional proteins).

I believe there are 6 naturally occuring and 4 developed for HIV/AIDS and hepatitis C, which are made by pharmacology companies. Not too sure how effective they are though....sorry!
