Prozac ???

I recently visited my doctor and I was diagnosed with OCD (mainly about HIV infection) he gave me prozac (20 mg / day). What can anybody tell me about this medication? Should I take it? What should I expect? Personal experiences are most welcome !

PROZAC is one of the world's most widely prescribed antidepressants; it has been prescribed for more than 40 million people worldwide. Chances are, someone you know is getting better because of it.

PROZAC was the first of a new class of drugs, called selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), to be approved for use in the United States. This new type of medication helps patients with depression by increasing the availability of serotonin in the brain. Scientists believe serotonin affects many types of activity in the brain, including the regulation of mood.

How does PROZAC work?
Depression is not fully understood, but a growing amount of evidence supports the view that people with depression have an imbalance of the brain's neurotransmitters, the chemicals that allow nerve cells in the brain to communicate with each other. Many scientists believe that an imbalance in serotonin, one of these neurotransmitters, may be an important factor in the development and severity of depression.

While PROZAC cannot be said to "cure" depression, it does help to control the symptoms of depression, allowing many people with depression to feel better and return to normal functioning. [ See graphic below ]

With PROZAC: Many scientists believe that Prozac works by blocking the action of the serotonin uptake pump. When serotonin is released from the "sending" nerve cell, some of it is reabsorbed by an uptake pump. By blocking the serotonin uptake pump, Prozac increases the amount of active serotonin that can be delivered to the "receiving" nerve cell. This may help message transmission return to normal.

I was on Prozac for four years to treat anxiety and depression. It helped me tremendously. I was able to sleep better, I was able to relax, and I stopped obsessing over things that were out of my control. I stopped beating myself up and stopped panicking over inappropriate things. I can't say enough good things about it.

It's definetely not for everyone, but you should be all right since your doctor prescribed it and diagnosed you with OCD, which is a form of anxiety. Prozac is commonly used to treat anxiety.

I have been on Prozac (for depression) off-and-on for several years now and it definitely helps. When I started taking it, I was on 20mg/day, but after a while, I didn't feel like it was really doing anything, so my doctor upped my prescription to 40 mg. I am now trying to wean myself off after being on it for quite a while. However, I can say without hesitation that Prozac is a wonder drug, so don't be afraid of taking it. However, do be aware that, like me, you may not notice that it's doing anything so you need to be in communication with your doctor so he/she can make the decision to possibly up your dosage as well. If that happens, don't worry as it sometimes takes doctors a while and through trial-and-error to hit on the right dosage for each patient. Hang in there -- it will get better.

Common / extreme withdrawals from this so called wonder drug PROZAC are headaches, tremors, dizziness, insomnia, anxiety, nervousness, agitation, abnormal dreams, drowsiness and fatigue, anger for no reason, flu-like symptoms, hives, epileptic seizures, shakes, sweating/chills, electrical shocks through the head and or body, extreme and excruciatingly painful burning like sensations as if your skin is on fire, suicidal and or homicidal thoughts and tendencies, and so much more.
