Zuma had testified that the sex was consensual, that "(i)n Zulu culture, you cannot leave a woman if she is ready. To deny her sex, that would have been tantamount to rape." He also said that he had not bothered with a condom even though he knew she was HIV-positive, cheerfully explaining, "I had a shower afterward." It just goes to she the ignorance surrounding the transmission of HIV. Some people even believe that sex with a virgin will cure HIV. They even say the younger the virgin the better. It's absolutely disgusting.

there are a lot of stories of women being victimized in african culture...murder, mutiliation, rape...zuma's reactions do not surprise me.

Don't they all have AIDS anyway? They are born with it over there. You cannot try to find out the reasons from over there unless you come from there. They are forced to live like animals through poverty and no amount of discussions are going to change the fact that this is a way of life. You don't live there so just accept it or ignore it. Its a fact.

Its not wise to judge another culture so easily. There are a lot of African communities who think so differently from us that it turns your world upside down! They are struggling to come to terms with HIV and its their cultural traditions that are letting them down. Its hard enough educating people about these things in the first place but asking a whole nation to change the way they think about the most basic things is nigh on impossible! I feel for all the little orphans out there. I hope the education programme (small as it is and unaided by any of us) can help. We do nothing to help these people so I am not going to judge.

The funny thing about it is, the Liberal Lefties like those in the Labour Party seem to duck for cover when asked for their opinion on the matter when it was them who pushed for an end to the apartheid regime. Now many in Africa can't feed themselves and the South Africans are going the same way.

In Africa (where AIDS originated from infected bush meat) it is considered 'macho' not to use a condom. The recently elected Kenyan President has said it's his duty to have sex with (rape) women who wear short skirts. Great attitude, then they flood West in their thousands for free AIDS medication on the NHS.

imagine if we never interfered in their affairs, would it be like this now, i don't think so.its a disaster of epic proportions.

The one time i agree with you, elect a man who actually said having sex, probably not consensual, a woman with HIV was OK because i had a shower after was probably the most damning indication of what's wrong in their society.
