Can a newborn screening detect HIV infection?

Can a newborn screening detect HIV infection?

yes, newborns can get tested for HIV

I believe it is a law in most if not all states they have to screen all new borns for hiv.

Yes it can

yes i am pretty sure it can but i think it is up to the parents to want to have the baby tested for hiv.

Yes. The baby should be tested especially if the mother is HIV positive. Without medication during pregnancy, an HIV positive mother has an 85% chance of giving HIV to her baby. With medication, these chances can be significantly decreased.

Newborns are able to be screened for HIV, but you must wait until the maternal antibodies that are present at birth have removed themselves from your baby's body as they can sometimes provide a false reading. If you are asking if the newborn screening test or heel prick test done in hospitals also screens for HIV, the answer is no. This only tests for rare metabolic disorders as well as the cystic fibrosis gene. See your GP for more information, it is likely to be more accurate than information you receive here & when it comes to baby you should want the most accurate information.
