How did the evolution of HIV infection in patients like Jeff Gustafson compare to natural selection? I'm not sure about this exact case. But many strains of HIV have become resistant to the antiviral drugs used to combat them. HIV is a virus with a high mutation rate, so strains that mutate in a way that make them resistant to the drug will become the predominant strain in the host. (The antiviral drug will kill the susceptible virus particles) |
