So what information should we trust?

I've read far too many posts containing misleading information about condoms regarding HIV transmission, STD prevention, and pregnancy prevention. What are the true statistics regarding pregnancy prevention with perfect contraceptive (condom) use? I've heard everything from 70 to 99%. I've also heard condoms have "small holes" in them, which I find to be highly unlikely. What's the truth?

With perfect use pregnancy prevention is 97-98% With typical use it is about 85%. The 70-99% effectiveness in prevention of transmission of STDs is correct. Effectiveness varies from STD to STD because some STDs don't require exchange of bodily fluids to be transmitted just skin to skin contact.
